If you have questions regarding where and how to install your L-Rak, which parts to order, or how many to order, we will give you a free telephone consultation. Call anytime 548-206-4800.
Where to install your L-Rak
- In Drawers. There are 3 sizes of L-Rak brackets—8”, 10”, & 12”. The wooden base is ¾” thick, so the 8” brackets need 9” of vertical clearance, the 10” brackets need 11” clear, and the 12” brackets need 13” clear. Also check the size (diameter) of the lids you are going to organize and figure out whether or not they fit in the space you have selected.
- On Shelves. If you install your L-Rak on a shelf, make sure that in addition to the clearances listed above in (a) for drawers, you have sufficient clearance above the brackets to insert your lids. If you have pull-out shelves, you can ignore this requirement and use the same clearances listed for drawers in (a) above.
- On Walls. If you install your L-Rak on any wall, try to attach it to a stud or similar wooden member strong enough to support it. You can also mount it on sheetrock provided you use adequate anchors, although it is always better if there is wooden backing behind the sheetrock.
- On Doors. If you install your L-Rak on a door, make sure the hinges are strong enough to support the weight. The ideal door location is an out-swing pantry door. You can get the L-Rak base in sections up to 8 feet long, which provides enough space to comfortably store plastic lids, baking tins, and cutting boards in addition to your pot lids. The brackets typically used on doors have a 45 degree bend instead of the standard 60 degree bend. The steeper angle helps conserve space and holds the items stored in the L-Rak more firmly in place when the door is opened and closed. The more acute angle may require the brackets be spaced slightly farther apart. Two 2” X #8 wood screws at the top and one at the bottom should be strong enough to secure your L-Rak to a solid core door. For hollow core doors, try to anchor into the head and bottom rails rather than the hollow-core veneer. If that’s not possible, glue the L-Rak to the door and secure with two 1-1/4” X #14 wood screws at the top and two at the bottom. Be careful not to strip the screws out of the hollow-core veneer.
Ordering the correct parts
- Once you have determined where you install your L-Rak, you can figure out what parts to order. Use the clearance information given above in (1-a). Then measure the depth of the drawer or the length of the shelf, wall space, or door where you wish to install your L-Rak. We will cut your wooden base to the dimensions you give us within 1/8” tolerance. If you want to cut your base yourself, we will send it 1” long and you may cut it to fit. We recommend cutting the base sort by 3/16” to ¼” to allow for easy insertion and removal.
- Order 7 or 8 brackets for each 20 inches of wooden base. For drawers, walls, and shelves, order 60 degree brackets; for doors order 45 degree brackets.
- We also carry specialized brackets for narrow-handle U-shaped lids and for plastic and rubber lids for Tupperware and similar seal-tight containers. Simply specify how many or each type in your order.
- Each bracket comes with two stainless steel #14 screws.
Pricing
- All brackets are $10 each, regardless of size or shape.
- Pre-drilled, pre-finished maple plywood bases are $10 for the first 2 feet, and $10 per each additional foot.
Attaching your L-Rak brackets to the wooden base
- Place the wooden base in the intended space to see if it fits. If it does, remove it and install the brackets.
- Place the first bracket so that it angles over one end of the wooden base and attach it to the base with two #14 screws (provided). Snug the screws down but DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. If you over tighten, you will strip the thread-attachment in the wooden base.
- Place the base in the intended space and insert a pot lid. If it conflicts with a drawer front or shelf support, move the bracket to the next pair of attachment holes further back.
- Install the remaining brackets in sequentially from the first one you install. Installing them in this order will facilitate insertion of the screws.
- Once all the brackets are in place, place your assembled L-Rak in the intended space. Then insert the pot lids in the desired order. When installing lids with U-shaped handles, you may find it helpful to pinch the two spring arms together as you slide the pot lid into place.
- If you strip the wooden base by over tightening a screw, put a drop or two of carpenter’s glue into the stripped hole, insert the butt end of a wooden match into it, break it off more or less flush with the wood surface of the base, and reinsert the screw. It is not necessary to wait for the glue to dry. With thin-stemmed matches, it may take two or three pieces to fill the hole snugly.
